Frequently asked plumbing questions and answers.

Hot water / heating not working

This depends on the hot water and heating system installed.

1. Low pressure - if you have a combination boiler it could be as simple as to re pressurise it. Usually this can be done below the boiler itself but always check the manufacturer’s instructions before turning valves or call RS Plumbing and Heating to help.

2. No connection from thermostat to boiler - Replace the batteries or move the thermostat closer to the boiler. Also check the boiler that heating or hot water have not been accidently turned off.

If in doubt call a professional plumber.

Common Plumbing Issues and Effective Solutions.

Plumbing issues you have at home can sometimes be fixed simply and without the need to call out a professional plumber, a few of these common questions are answered here.

Dripping taps and showers

Dripping taps can be an annoyance, constant noise or staining that it can cause. If left they will gradually get worse.

1. If the tap is under warranty contact the manufacturer or the place it was purchased from.

2. Taps have either cartridges or older taps can have seats, both of these can usually be repaired or replaced in the case of cartridges.

First of all, the tap needs to be isolated to stop the water from entering the tap, this can be from below the sink or basin with isolation or lever valves.

The tap head needs to be removed to expose the cartridge, this is usually done by an allen grub screw or a Philips screw. once the cartridge is exposed it can be removed with the correct size spanner. take this to a plumber’s merchants for a replacement or search on line for the correct tap replacement.

A seated tap requires a special tool whish screws in top the tap body and gently grinds the surface flat to stop water passing the rubber.

Toilet not flushing or constantly running

Depending on the style / age / make of toilet cistern a replacement flush valve can be easily fitted, modern toilet cisterns have a click in - out flush valve.

If you can access this valve, it may have a make and model on it which you can take to a plumber’s merchant to source a replacement and easily fit.

In older style toilets you may have a traditional flush valve which would require the water to be isolated and cistern removed from the toilet pan, this is usually 2 nuts below the toilet under the cistern.

The traditional flush is held in place with a large nut which needs to be undone to remove it, Remove the flush handle wire and the valve comes out. To replace a new valve, reverse the steps.

If in doubt call a professional plumber.
